“Do What You Can, Where You Are, With What You Have”.

Do what you can where you are with what you have

“Do the best you can, where you are, with what you have.” TR

Driving through town the other night, I saw a sign in front of a church that read, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”  I chuckled at the thought, but did not give it too much thought until a few days later while on an afternoon hike.

I headed out to my favorite local park to photograph a few large whitetail bucks, and Wild Turkeys.  What I really wanted was some good quality wild turkey shots.  The park is home to a bunch of turkeys who seem not too afraid of people.  If I played my cards right, I hoped to have a few photos to use with my upcoming turkey hunting articles in the spring.

Ending my normal loop walk around the park, I was still without my turkey shots.  I had seen only a bunch of does and small bucks.  Standing next to an old barn, watching several young does feed, I turned around to witness one of the most beautiful sunsets I can remember.  Now, being colorblind, I generally miss out on seeing the vivid colors of a great sky.  Rainbows are a boring faded two colors across the sky.  But on this evening, as the sun lit the clouds on its way below the horizon ending another day, I saw the colors.  Even better, I was standing at the perfect spot to frame the sunset using a barn and windmill.

My plan was to take photographs of deer and turkeys.  God’s plan was for me to see and photograph a wondrous sunset.  I only had to turn around and look for his plan.  How often are we so intent on our own plan, that we do not raise our heads and look around at what is presented to us?

Oxon Run Crazy sunsetBeing colorblind, I’m uncertain how this photograph looks to a normal person.  I edited the photo very little and did not adjust the color, how you see it is as it appeared, and to my eyes it was amazing.

Walking back to the truck, I remembered the church sign and smiled.  A quote from another influential person,Theodore Roosevelt, came to mind, “Do the best you can, where you are, with what you have”.

I still don’t have the turkey shots.  All in time, I’m sure.
