Augie Shoots Big Whitetail Buck

Posted by on October 23, 2013

A Quick Evening Hunt

The feeling to spend the evening in the woods was too strong to ignore. The whitetail woods were calling.  The gear stays in the truck at all times for just this reason.  With the work day behind, I head to the woods in pursuit of the number one hunted mammal in America, the whitetail deer.

Evening hunts after work are most enjoyable.  They break up the work week.  The woods are less crowded with hunters.  And it is just nice to spend any day of the week in the woods watching the sun fade on the day and the whitetails come out to feed.

Taking a chance, I post myself on the ground leaning against a large white oak watching the grass field. The wind carries my scent away from the direction I anticipate the deer to arrive.  The sun closes in on the horizon.  It is one of those perfect evenings.

To my surprise, the first deer to enter the field is a buck, a good sized eight pointer with very long brow tines.  He closes the distance, feeding in my direction.  I take aim.  I need to take the shot before I lose shooting light and it becomes too dark. The Nikon D7000 topped with a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 lens, does its job and I make a perfect shot.  I think I’ll have him mounted in a triple matted frame 24×16.
