A warm, late winter, Saturday, perfect for a hike around the Mall.
In two weeks, I’m off for a few days of camping on the sands of the North Carolina Outer Banks, but this weekend, I’m stuck here in the city pinching pennies. So what is a wander like me to do? Find some exotic place close to the home front to stretch the legs and take a few photographs.
After a short 1.5 mile hike through historic Old Town, VA, I board the subway and ride toward my destination, The Mall in Washington DC.
Arriving at my destination, I watch the tourist from all over the world read maps and plan their attack. There is so much to see and do from the monuments in tribute to our war heroes, the history on display in the Smithsonian buildings and the Nation’s Capital, the tourist easy become overwhelmed with what to see next. The local joggers enjoy the warming winter day and weave their way through the visiting tourist.
Not a foreign tourist, nor a local, I balance between the two and enjoy the sunny afternoon with camera in hand.
Because of the building in the background, we are able to freely travel our country exploring everything from sandy beaches to snow capped mountains. And even a city from time to time.
When was the last time you stood and looked long and hard at the Stars and Stripes, reflecting on what it truly represents?
I do not know who had placed the roses on the Monument, but the visual struck me.
