Shad Fishing Report – Fletcher’s Cove

Augie’s Adventures – Shad Fishing Report

According to my fishing journal, last year the shad fishing was the best the second week of April or there about. But the weather was too nice not to give it a try yesterday afternoon. So, on March 24, 2016, I headed over to Fletcher’s Cove and put the boat in the water.

Shad Fishing

Boy am I glad I did. The shad fishing was hot. From 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM, I caught shad on more casts then not, including several doubles.  I don’t believe I ever started off a fishing season catching a fish on the second cast, then another on casts 3, 4, and 6, with casts 3 and 6 being doubles.

Shad Fishing

The shad are here and if the rest of the run goes like tonight did, then we’re in for a great season of shad fishing. Oh yea, and the stripers are lurking around Fletcher’s cove as well.

The rig I typically use when Shad fishing is nothing fancy. I tie on two shad darts one about 2 to 3 feet up the line and the second on the end of the line. This evening the color did not seem to matter much, as I caught as many on the red and white as I did on the pink and white.

When shad fishing I like to look for the seams in the water, the edges between the fast and slow water. On some days the fish can be found resting in the eddies and others they can be found traveling up the faster water, but I like to begin by fishing the edges. Tonight was no different and when I placed the boat close to the pockets and cast into the pockets, I found the fish.

It is time to start fishing. The Shad are here. If you need to find me in the next couple of weeks, I’ll be at Fletcher’s cove Shad Fishing.
