Reflections Under the Big Pine

Posted by on December 16, 2013

I have only met Bill Miller a few times at events like sportsman’s banquets and the SHOT show several years ago.  If you have spent any time watching hunting shows on TV or read any sportsman’s magazines or are familiar with the North American Hunting Club, then you are also familiar with Bill Miller.  When I first saw that he had co-authored the book, Reflections Under the Big Pine, with K.J. Houtman, I just had to get my hands on a copy.

Yesterday evening following a weekend of deer hunting and after the venison was quartered and on ice, I sat down start reading.   My mind was a little distraught over the lack of time I had been able to spend in the deer woods this season.  Sure, I had been able to add venison to the freezer, but another season is quickly coming to a close without that trophy buck.

A quick scan of the book revealed short chapters each with an opening bible verse and ending with a prayer.  I had understood the book to be a collection of short stories connecting nature and faith.  What I quickly discovered was much more and in the end, I closed the book after reading only three chapters and scanning the rest.

Reflections Under the Big Pine is a book to be read in small pieces, thinking and absorbing the words, verse, and prayer.  Closing the book last night, I made a promise to myself.  I will read a single chapter each morning over breakfast.  For the first time in my life, I will set time aside each morning for a devotional.  Not what I was expecting out of this book, but the greatest gifts often come unexpected.

I strongly suggest if you or if you know anyone who is in need of a nature centered morning reading to help center one’s life, get a copy and start reading.

As I read Reflections Under the Big Pine,  I will report back on my thoughts.  Join me with the reading.
