A Story Worth Living

A Story Worth Living

At a very pivotal point in my life I read the book “Wild At Heart” by John Eldredge. Or maybe that time in my life became pivotal because of reading “Wild at Heart.” Either way, when I arrived at the theater last evening to watch the special showing of “A Story Worth Living”, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the same John Eldregde that penned one of the most influential books in my life was also responsible for this movie.

On the superficial cover of the movie, one would believe they are going to see a movie about a bunch of guys riding their BMW motorcycles through the Colorado mountains focusing on the ride and scenery. But in fact the movie was about so much more. “A Story Worth Living” is just that, a movie exploring life and living your story. In one scene you quickly catch a glimpse of a tee shirt a guy is wearing that reads “My life is a true story.” My daughter and I both caught it and this opened a great discussion about how true and powerful that statement can be if we allow ourselves to be ourselves. The movie caused my own personal reflection on what is my story and how can I make it truly my own in such a way that God has intended.

In a recent interview in the Huffington Post, John Eldregde was asked, what’s the first step someone should take if they want to live a better story?

Eldredge replied, “Allow yourself to dream. Turn the editor off – that internal voice that always asks, yeah but how. How isn’t helpful. Just let your heart come back up to the surface, give it a voice. Do some dreaming. Try something. Let adventure help you come alive. Howard Thurman said, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, because what the world needs are people who have come alive.” That will get you going in the right direction for sure.”

For myself, I have been working hard to save money and build my new truck into the adventure vehicle I have always wanted. In order to do that, I have had to forgo Friday nights out, local weekend camping trips and cable TV. However, as the build nears completion, at least the first stage, I enter into the traveling, exploring phase of my story. A story I hope to live full of adventure and on my terms, as it is my story and not someone else’s.

Once again John Eldredge has come into my life at a pivotal time in my life story, helping me to see the direction of my story, even if it is a path unused by many. For that is the gift we are given, a story worth living, if we so choose to get up and live it.

If you get a chance to see the movie I strongly suggest you take the time watch. They are going to be introducing more short clips discussing deeper into the meanings of your story, your life and these clips will be available at ww.astoryfilm.com.
